Honoring the rich and complex history of the Mississippi Delta and its people, the Mississippi Delta Family Medicine Residency Program (MDFMRP) is the only graduate medical education program located in and serving the Mississippi Delta. Founded in 2020, MDFMRP emphasizes excellent patient care, a high educational standard, and community engagement to meet the need for family doctors to serve the Mississippi Delta region.
Containing parts of 18 counties in northwest Mississippi, the Mississippi Delta is a traditionally agricultural area with a rich culture of music, food, and history. As an area that is also traditionally underserved and rife with socioeconomic disparities, the Delta experiences difficulties with access, payment, transportation, technology and inequity in healthcare resource distribution. Part of the core mission of the MDFMRP is to help alleviate these burdens on the health and well-being of the residents of the Mississippi Delta.
